Article topics range from history, arts, social sciences, and philosophy of East, South, and Southeast Asia. China represents the most dominant region that is covered in the journal. In terms of the academic disciplines represented, history is the most popular, followed by political science and economics. In addition to regular articles, a large section of the journal is devoted to book reviews.
From 1941 to 1991, the Association for Asian Studies published an annual Bibliography of Asian Studies as a supplement to the journal. Since 1991 the bibliography has only been available by a separate subscription.
The entire contents of The Journal of Asian Studies are available in full-text, searchable electronic databases. All issues except the most recent three years are available on JSTOR; more recent issues on ProQuest or on the website of the publisher, Cambridge University Press.
